Great success hunting the shy Caracal cat

The African Lynx, Caracal, is an extremely shy animal normally very difficult to hunt. This is part of the reason why the beautiful reddish-golden cat is an attractive trophy for most of our safari guests.

We normally employ two different methods when hunting Caracal: Either we hunt at daytime together with a pack of specially trained dogs. When the dogs come across a fresh track, they chase the Caracal up into a tree where the hunter can then sneak up to take a shot.

On the latest four safaris, however, we have had great success with spotlighting the Caracals at night. Each of our clients got a really large cat. On night hunts we drive around slowly while scanning the bush with powerful spotlights. Caracals have very reflective eyes and one is rarely in doubt when the spotlight hits the eyes of a Caracal.  Night hunting is an exciting form of hunting, and often when out at night we encounter other, huntable species such as Jackal, Genet Cat, Porcupine and Spring Hare.
