Eastern Cape Kudu - a beautiful trophy
Side by Side Safari's hunting concession is located in the heart of the Eastern Cape Kudu's range. Eastern Cape Kudu is recognised as a subspecies of the Southern Greater Kudu. The Eastern Cape subspecies has body that is roughly 20% smaller and with smaller horns that its larger cousin.
SCI has for many years accepted East Cape Kudu as a subspecies with subsequent much smaller minimum requirements for medal heads: 98 points for bronze compared to 121 point for Southern Greater Kudu. A stretch of land of more than 400 km without kudu population separates the two subspecies. This ensures that there is no overlapping of their ranges. The rutting season usually starts in late May and continues on until well into June. This is normally the best period for hunting Eastern Cape Kudu as the old bulls are then constantly on the move in their search for females. The rest of the year the old bulls prefer to hide in dense bush.
One of our Swedish clients was lucky enough to bag two gold medal bulls with us during last season's rut – both truly spectacular trophies of Eastern Cape Kudu.
