Blue Duiker
The Blue Duiker (Philantomba monticola) is one of the smallest antelopes, found near the coasts of South Africa. These small and graceful creatures weigh only about 4-5 kg and measure roughly 30-40 cm at shoulder height. Blue Duiker subsists on a diet of various leaves, fruits, and flowers. The origin of their name, "Blue," refers to their blue-grey fur that helps them camouflage within the forest.
The Hunt for Blue Duiker
Hunting the Blue Duiker requires patience and a keen understanding of the animal's behavior. Typically, hunting occurs in the early morning or late afternoon when the animals are most active. Hunters must navigate through the dense terrain of the Eastern Cape, which can be challenging but also highly rewarding. Often, hunters will use bait or employ stalking techniques to get close to the animal.
Optimal Shot Placement
To ensure a humane and effective hunt, shots should be placed in the chest, aiming for vital organs, particularly the heart and lungs. This way, a well-placed shot can swiftly and effectively take down the animal without unnecessary suffering. It is recommended to aim just behind the shoulders to hit the correct spot.
Optimal Rifle for the Hunt
When setting out to hunt the small Blue Duiker, a light caliber rifle is the best choice. A .223 or .243 caliber rifle is often suitable for this type of hunt. Rifles with good precision and optics with low magnification help ensure accurate shot placement in the dense bush.
